Vera Geluk
age 11
Malignant histiocytosis.
(the girl has the status of the victim of Chernobyl atomic power
station explosion - she is the daughter of the worker-liquidator.)

After the next semi-annual treatment in Kiev the condition of Vera was not improved. In fact she has returned to Simferopol in more heavy condition.

The doctors in Simferopol, and Vera self, continue to struggle for her life. The speech ability has returned to the girl and she has risen from an invalid wheel chair. However, the final diagnosis still is not defined...

Four years long the doctors were not able to define a diagnose for Vera, though the girl felt worse and worse. This is the price which our country pays for Chernobyl's consequences...

(in hospital with a friend)

Vera and her mum Olga - they have only each other in their life of this moment...
It's very necessary now to provide both with the financial help and a moral support.

GIVE THEM A HELPING
HAND, PLEASE !

NEWS:

26 March 2005
Starting from October last year Vera was suffering a lot. The condition was getting worse...
Yesterday at 23:30 she was taken to reanimation with a diagnose of pulmonary edema.
Today, Olga, the mum, has informed us that Vera is not with us anymore...

3 March 2005
In December 2004 doctors discovered at Vera’s head two tumors. The operation planned in the Israeli clinic, is postponed for uncertain time. Now doctors struggle with this new trouble. One German clinic has agreed to operate Vera, but at the present moment and the condition the girl it is not transportable. The struggle continues in the Kiev hospital and we have to wait for its results. The financial help is still sharply necessary.

24 December 2004
Vera has finished another block of therapy in the end of September. She has entered in remission, for about 3 month as doctors suppose.

The volunteers from Kiev are negotiating with a hospital in Israel for a possible bone-marrow transplantation. The total costs of such operation will be around 127 000 USD, plus 10-15 000 USD for the accepting Vera's request for search of the non-relative donor...

11 August 2004
Situation is rather complicated. Now Vera has completed the last block of chemotherapy and feels not bad. She stays with the mum in Yalta – with the older daughter of Olga Geluk.
In the Cheronbyl’s Medical Center the doctors consider that the operation can not be done in the present conditions. Vera’s heart is very week and the level of calcium is low. In a heart bag the liquid gets accumulated. The situation is heavy.
The special account for the collection of money for an operation is now open. There’s information published in press. People already transfer some means. If Vera’s heart will come to norm then it will be possible to make operation.

14 June 2004
Vera stayed home in Krim. Now she's back to Kiev's hospital to continue the treatment.

26 April 2004
There are good new about Vera. Finally, after the long search, a blood donor for Vera was found (group 4).
The girl feels better. Now she can walk, hold by her mum.
Vera gets treatment in a form of therapeutic blocks (Cortexin, Cogitum). The block of Cogitum is 3 month long. She still needs more of this medicine. Because it's very expensive they never have enough stock for a long time.
Vera has been at home on 10 days vacation. Today she returns to the hospital to continue with the treatment.

29 January 2004
There's a very good news! We have managed within one week to collect among the friends and colleagues in Holland and Italy the amount of 2.000 USD. Just this sum was missing to cover costs for the operation.
On January 21 the preparatory block for Vera was begun. If the preparation will go without deviations and Vera will enter the remission, the bone marrow transplantation can be carried out in the beginning of February.
We very much hope and wait with impatience for the results…

28 November 2003
Between December 1-5 Vera is going to the hospital in Kiev for further checking.
She needs an urgent operation!
Unfortunately, the necessary amount is still not collected - it means that the treatment can not be started (the after operation period has to be provided with the costly medicines). If the help will come on time, it is still possible to save the girls life...

29 August 2003
At last the diagnosis of Vera - malignant histiocytosis - is defined. This oncological disease can be defeated in the only way: bone marrow transplantation. This complex and rather expensive operation can be done in Kiev or abroad. Costs of the preparations necessary for the operation in Kiev are 10-15 thousand dollars.
The closely related donor for the girl is not available at the moment....
